Through H.E.L.P.’s program, Chow Night, 30-40 homeless and/or low income
families come every single Thursday to St. Martin’s
Church for a free, warm meal. On a $30 budget, stemming mostly from membership
fees, and with 5-10 volunteers each week from H.E.L.P. and occasionally from
other community service organizations, we are able to buy, cook, and serve food
for these people to make their day a little better and less stressful.
Many of the same people come each week, and
without Chow Night, they would have nothing to eat on Thursday nights. Unlike a
regular “soup kitchen”, Chow Night serves restaurant style and everyone sits in
a square facing each other, while we bring them food. Volunteers gather in the
kitchen, scurrying around to get the meal done in time in order to serve. Each
Thursday, the amount of gratitude coming from these people is overwhelming,
positively reflecting the impact of our program.
Chow Nights also offers volunteer opportunities for other
student groups. If your group is interested in volunteering with us, shoot
us an email.
